Volunteering in Havana

Submitted by: Philip Theriault
Date Submitted: September 13, 2010

Join me, retired Nova Scotian teacher Philip Theriault, in Havana in March, 2011 helping students at the Foreign Language Institute of the University of Havana. I would like to invite retired teachers, as well as other interested people from Nova Scotia, to join us in late winter as a volunteer English or French language mentor and help the students of this country improve their second language skills. In addition to volunteering, volunteers will have the opportunity to:

•Have a private orientation tour of various points of interest in Havana
•Participate in the annual Terry Fox Run in Havana
•Visit a Cuban elementary or secondary school and talk to the staff and students
•Be a guest at an evening reception at the Canadian Embassy •Attend a Santaria/Salsa celebration
•Be a guest at a meeting of the local Committee for the Defense of the Revolution and learn about the Cuban political and social system
•Make friends and learn about the real Cuba

Volunteer(s) wanted: "My name is Brianne Peters and I’m a Settlement Worker in Schools. I work with the PEI Association for Newcomers to Canada. Our program is currently in the beginning stages of planning for an after-school homework club for Immigrant students here at our offices. I was wanting to touch base with your organization to see what kind of possibilities there may be to have one or several volunteer retired teachers join us for 1 or 2 days per week starting in January. As I mentioned, this is still in the very early stages of planning so I’m just feeling out some different options for now. I appreciate any suggestions you could offer to me and my program and I hope to be able to work with you and your organization soon."

Brianne writes, December 23, 2008: "We have obtained approval from our Executive Director for our Homework Club. The schedule will be Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting January 20th, from 3:00pm-5:00pm. I know you put the information on your website, and I thank you for that, but I was wondering if you could send an email to your retired teachers mentioning it again. I have attached our recruitment flyer to this email in case you might be able to forward that along as well. We truly appreciate whatever help you could pass our way. Any volunteers interested would not have to commit to two days per week, unless they wanted to. Whatever time they could donate would be amazing."

September, 2008: Service opportunity in China:

"I am writing to you as I would like to tap into your membership roster to inquire if any of your members would be interested to teach in China for a year starting this Fall.

"As a background, the Business Company of the School District of New Westminster runs a BC-certified Off Shore School in Wenzhou, China. Our students are from Gr. 10 - 12. For this year, the number of new enrollees are more than what we anticipated hence, the short notice of needing one more certified (or BC certifiable) teacher. I am attaching our posting for your perusal and distribution to your membership.

"Please feel free to contact me, should you have any questions. Thank you very much for your assistance."
