P.E.I. Retired Teachers Association:
President's Address, November 2014
Sheridyth MacNeill

I would like to begin by saying that I feel very honored and proud to be elected President of the Retired Teachers' Association. I am following in the footsteps of very skillful Presidents and I am so thankful to have Past President Pat McCardle and the Vice-President Joyce McCardle on the Executive with their abundant knowledge and expertise.

One of the founders of our Association-Dr. James MacAulay is still involved-now as our Eastern Canadian Representative with our National Organization-ACER-CART and he always gives me very worthwhile advice.

As you are aware we have six Standing Committees and the Chairperson of each committee will be reporting to you on the activities of their committee. We are indeed fortunate to have the Executive and Committee Members in our RTA Association. They work very hard on your behalf and they have great foresight!

At this time I also want to send a big thank-you to the Staff of the PEITF. We seem to be connected with them on many issues we occur and their co-operation is so important to us! All of our Executive Meetings plus any other necessary activity such as the mailing of our Newsletters is facilitated by the people at PEITF.

With the help of our group insurance provider-Johnson Insurance- we are able to carry out an effective program for our Membership. I would like to now publically thank Johnson Insurance and our representative Dale Weldon for the assistance they provide to us and for principally making it possible to send out over eight hundred Newsletters to keep you updated on our Organization and what is happening. Hopefully you have all read your Newsletters either by hard copy or on line and therefore should be up to date with all our activities in the past year.

The last item I wish to update you with is the Eastern Canadian Retired Teachers' Organization[ECRTO] Meeting held this year in Halifax, N.S. on October 16th&17th. This indeed is a wonderful opportunity for Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Prince Edward Island to meet and discuss and compare what is happening for our Retired Teachers.

Our first meeting on the Agenda had Cathy Carmody-a former Islander-present her paper on "Novescence"[conscious aging]. She addressed the needs and expectations of a population-aging differently from all previous generations and now we need to "wake-up" and claim our intellectual, social, cultural, and personal needs as adults.

Next we had a Handout from Johnson Insurance presented by Paul Sarky as a comparison was given on the Atlantic Retired Teachers' Benefit Plan. They all are indeed very similar. At this time we also want to thank Johnson Insurance on the delicious meal they provided that evening for us.

The next morning we had a very informative presentation and update on National Pharmacare by Judy MacPhee. Next the ACER-CART was given and the Meeting finished with a round table discussion on a questionnaire that had been sent to us previously. It was indeed a great learning experience and in two years time our next President will be attending the Conference hosted in Newfoundland.

Again a big thank-you to Jim MacAulay who initiated the beginning of this conference in October, 2010.

In closing let me say that I look forward to an interesting and informative meeting today. Thank-you once again for coming and please take the time today to thank the Executive and Committee Members who do their best on your behalf.

Respectfully submitted,
Sheridyth MacNeill
